THE Zambia NGO WASH Forum has launched a report on fast-tracking the Human Right to Water and Sanitation.
Presenting a summary of the report, NGO WASH Forum Coordinator Bubala Muyovwe-Mumba said Zambia’s progress on water and sanitation goals faces challenges, including slow progress, lack of explicit constitutional recognition of the human right to water and sanitation (HRtWS), funding limitations, data gaps, and weak institutional autonomy.
Ms Mumba observes that while a strong policy framework and a Supreme Court ruling linking sanitation to the right to life offer support, constitutional reform is crucial for stronger accountability.
She adds that current infrastructure often lacks inclusivity, failing to adequately cater to persons with disabilities, women and girls, and young children.
Ms Mumba said a shift towards participatory design involving these groups is essential to ensure accessibility for all.
And NGO WASH Forum Board Chairperson Marlon Phiri urged the government to prioritise action and demonstrate financial commitments.
Meanwhile, Chairperson of the Parliamentary Caucus on Water and Sanitation (PC-WASH) Mutinta Twaambo said climate change impacts justify collaboration with stakeholders.
In addition, Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation Director Eng. Richard Kangwa emphasised the government’s commitment to ensuring water access for all.
EU Team Leader Bogdan Stefanescu congratulated the NGO WASH Forum and called for more dialogue.
SNV Zambia Country Director Lucy Fulgence expressed gratitude for support from the EU and Danish People’s Aid for the Water Voices United project, which aims to enhance WASH governance and support the realisation of the Human Right to Water and Sanitation.
This is contained in a statement issued by Zambia NGO WASH Forum Communications Officer Bangwe Naviley.
